Filmoplast 'R' Repair Tissue

Filmoplast 'R' is a heat activated adhesive tissue. It has all of the necessary archival qualities and is suitable for laminating weak and damaged paper. At 8.5 gsm it has a negligible effect on the thickness of a book when re-sewing sections.

Available in:
62cm x 1m lengths
62cm x 50 metre rolls

Further Information

Film Type - transparent, thin, Japanese paper, weight: approx. 8.5 g/m²

Hot Seal Adhesive - free of plasticisers

Thickness of Product - 50mm, after pressure sealing: 20-30mm

Auxiliary Agents - Magnesium carbonate and Magnesium hydroxycarbonate

Sealing Conditions in Press - Temperature:100°C - 120°C Pressure: approx. 7-9 kg/cm²

- Time:1 minute
- The acrylic acid estercopolymer adhesive provides good adhesion which remains intact even after repeated folding - unlike many PE sealing adhesives.
- Magnesium carbonate neutralises the acids which sometimes develop during the decomposition of old papers and which then migrate into the adhesive layer. the acids in sealed paper cannot be neutralised because the magnesium carbonate remains in the Adhesive. The pH value of paper including the adhesive is 9.6.

Characteristics of the hot sealing adhesive:
- age resistant
- colourless
- non-yellowing (applies only to paper backing and adhesive)
- good sealing of papers (not affected by repeated folding)
neutralises acid
- no fading or bleaching of colour prints or writing/marking inks after 4 weeks storage at 70°C. Colours containing plasticisers can fade, e.g. black ball point pen, but not blue or other colours.

Backing Paper:
- free of lignin
- free of hemicellulose
- high alpha cellulose content
- pH neutral

Blocking tendency:
- The hot sealing adhesive blocks at temperatures above 50°C. Possibly even at 35°C when under high pressure and high humidity. Rolls without masking paper must therefore be stored dry and cool.

Removal:
- The adhesive can be made soluble again through the application of acetone or heat. When using heat, be sure to allow the high temperature required to warm right through the adhesive. The sealing can then be removed.

5 of 5 Repair of Victorian book August 11, 2023
Reviewer: T J Bradley from Aberdeen, ABERDEEN United Kingdom
Excellent quality of materials to do this tricky repair, both the filmoplast and Japanese paper are doing a great job. The aged paper and craft paper will be in use later and these are also top quality. Quick response and delivery, many thanks to Hewitt for their service.

5 of 5 Very impressive customer service March 2, 2021
Reviewer: Fergus Pearson from Whitehaven, CUMBRIA United Kingdom
When Hewit's couldn't get the Filmoplast from Europe they let me know in a personal and humble way. I was kept informed of the progress of my order, again, personally, until it arrived.
In my experience such customer service is rare. For a company that supplies bulk orders for businesses I was very impressed that they took the time and interest to keep me informed when I am only an occasional customer, and my order was under £20.
